There's a living ecosystem on your skin right now. Billions of bacteria, fungi and microorganisms that determine how your skin ages, how it heals, how it felt this morning with no makeup on.
What the research actually says
A peer-reviewed study published in Microbiological Research (Wang et al., 2025) has found something that changes the way we think about skin ageing.
People with a more diverse skin microbiome show measurably fewer visible signs of ageing - shallower wrinkle depth, less dryness, better texture, regardless of their age. Not because of genetics or expensive actives. Because of the living ecosystem on their skin.
The research found that the skin microbiome plays a direct role in maintaining barrier integrity, regulating immune function and supporting the skin's capacity to repair itself. When microbial diversity declines - through over-cleansing, environmental stress, or harsh formulations - so too does the skin's ability to do its job.
Why this matters more than another anti-ageing ingredient
The skincare industry has spent decades selling us individual ingredients as the answer. Retinol, Vitamin C, Peptides - each one promising the fix.
What this research points to is different. It's not about adding something to the skin, it's about creating the conditions for the skin to function as it was designed to.
A diverse, balanced skin microbiome isn't a trend, it's the foundation that your skin health and vitality depends on.
What you can actually do
Every product in the Darl' range was formulated with this in mind, here's what that looks like in practice:
Choose prebiotic-rich formulations. Ingredients like Glucomannan, Beta Glucan, Inulin, Seaweed Extract and Aloe Vera feed the beneficial skin bacteria and support microbiome diversity. Every one of these is in your Darl' routine.
Cleanse, don't strip. Antibacterial soaps, harsh surfactants and over-exfoliation disrupt microbial balance and weaken the barrier. Your cleanser should leave your skin feeling like soft and supple, not squeaky or tight.
Watch your preservatives. Conventional preservatives are often broad-spectrum antimicrobials, effective at keeping products shelf-stable, but indiscriminate about what they kill on your skin. The Darl' Cleanser and Face Oil are 100% preservative-free. Our Serum uses a gentle microstatic preservative specifically chosen to support the microbiome rather than disrupt it.
This is why Darl' exists
We didn't build a brand around a hero ingredient or ten-step routine. We built it around the knowledge that skin supported at the level of its microbiome and barrier doesn't need to be managed, it starts to take care of itself.
If you've been using your Darl' routine consistently, you're already doing this, the research just gives you a reason to keep going.
